Water Sports

Kayaking (one person in each boat)
A great, individually challenging activity for all ages. Learn new skills while playing games and having fun. Beginners to advanced sessions available.

Canoeing (two to four persons in each boat)
A fun activity which is excellent for developing small team participation and communication. Beginners to advanced sessions available.

Both of the above activities can be operated at a choice of venues:  a small private lake, Lake Ngaroto (situated about 15 minutes drive from the lodge) and the Waikato river. For prices and information, please contact the lodge warden.

Water Hole
Apart from a quick paddle in the nearby stream, the nearest water hole to the lodge is on Limeworks Loop Road. This is about a 15 minute drive from the lodge and is combined with a picnic area and DoC toilet. It is also the start of the Nikau Loop Walk, which is a flat walk along the Kaniwhaniwha Stream. The actual loop section of the walk begins as the stream emerges from the bush. In total it takes about 3 hours to complete the loop, including crossing a small swing bridge over the stream.

An interesting side trip can be made from the loop, to explore the only natural caves on Mt. Pirongia. This is only 10 minutes further walking and allows your students to squeeze through relatively small, but short, caves, without the need for a qualified guide.
