Stream Studies

The Mangakara Stream is only 5 minutes walk from the lodge, along a track suitable for use year-round, allowing students to see and appreciate a healthy mountain stream. The Stream is an excellent example of a healthy mountain stream and there is plenty of stream life to be found nestled within the volcanic pebble bed.

The Stream is an excellent example of a healthy mountain stream and there is plenty of stream life to be found nestled within the volcanic pebble bed.

In the past Environment Waikato have organised teacher education days using the Mangakara Stream due to it's ease of access and plentiful stream life.

Environment Waikato have a wealth of information on planning stream study visits, which they complement with comprehensive resources. They have up to 8 sets of excellent stream study equipment that can be hired for free to Waikato Schools. They also produce a range of teaching resourses that enable stream study units to be incorporated into planning for a visit to the Mangakara Stream.

The lodge also has a selection of stream study worksheets (available from the Lodge Warden). Although we only have limited resources (thermometers, magnifying glasses and organism collection trays), these are available for use free to schools staying at the lodge.

Any schools planning a stream study unit would be well advised to contact:

Environment Waikato on 0800 800 401
or P. O. Box 4010, Hamilton
