There are two orienteering courses set up premanently in the lodge grounds. One is
for beginners and is a code cracking exercise, whereas the advanced course uses
proper orienteering clippers and is thus an excellent introduction to the sport.

Beginners Course
The beginners orienteering course is made up of 10 blue markers. Each marker is
numbered and also contains a symbol. The students use laminated maps (10 are
available) of the grounds with the position of the markers indicated.
They then use the map to orientate themselves to find the markers within the lodge grounds. Once they have found each marker, they note down the code shown on it. When they have found all of the markers, they return to the lodge and decode the symbols they have found, using a decode board in the lodge. This then spells out a word associated with the area. Note: None of the orienteering courses use compasses. The courses focus on map reading and orientating. Compasses are available if you wouldlike to teach advanced skills. |

Advanced Course
The advanced orienteering course is made up of 10 orange markers (shown on the
right). Each marker is numbered and is connected to a uniquely coded orienteering
clipper. The students use laminated maps (10 are available) of the grounds with the
position of the markers indicated. They also require a sheet of paper to clip when
each marker is found.
They then use the map to orientate themselves to find the markers within the lodge grounds. Once they have found each marker, they clip their piece of paper. When they have found all of the markers, they return to the lodge and check their clippings are correct, using the answer sheet in the lodge. Note: None of the orienteering courses use compasses. The courses focus on map reading and orientating. Compasses are available if you would like to teach advanced skills. |
